Opportunities for Funding

Funding for graduate students in the MCB program includes tuition, a contribution to health insurance and a monthly stipend. During their first semester (while doing rotations), our students receive a stipend from the MCB program. During subsequent semesters, students are typically funded through their mentor’s external funding (Graduate Research Assistantship, GRA) or receive a departmental teaching assistantship (GTA).

In addition, we encourage our students to seek competitive, external funding.

The MCB program offers competitive travel awards (see below).

Collaborative visits to other labs

The Company of Biologists’ Travelling Fellowship

GPSS Travel Fund Program

Partial grants to cover graduate student conference travel (both within the US and international), sponsored by the Graduate School and the Virginia Tech Office of the Provost. Three deadlines per year.

MCB Program Travel Award

Three travel fellowships in the amount of max. $1,000 will be awarded annually to meritorious students for domestic and international travel to present data at scientific meetings.

Please submit to any member of the Program Committee:

• Application form
• One page CV
• A letter of endorsement from your mentor clearly stating how you will benefit from participation

Applications will be evaluated twice per year (March 30 and September 30) by the MCB Program Committee and current MCB PhD students.

VIRTUAL CONFERENCES

Travel awards can be use to attend virtual conferences. In this case, presenting your work is not obligatory. But in case of competing applications for virtual conferences, preference will be given to those who present.
